Alpine Butler tips and tricks

Of course, our Alpine Butler has emergency equipment in his rucksack, but on a mountain anything can happen and everyone should carry their own rucksack and be responsible for themselves.

Equipment/clothing
The altitude may offer pleasant coolness on hot days – but many are sure to sweat on the way up. We therefore recommend bringing along a shirt to change into. Rain, cold and sun protection should always be in your rucksack, as well as a small first aid kit (with any necessary personal medication) and your mobile phone.

Griaß-eich & Servus
Above 1,000 m altitude in Austria everyone is on first name terms. And that also applies to Turracher Höhe (1,763 m). Hikers, mountain lodge hosts and guests – on both the Carinthian and the Styrian side – are always happy to hear a friendly ‘Servus’ or ‘Griaß-eich’ whenever you meet them.
Dogs
The alpine meadows are not petting zoos!!!
Dogs should always be on a lead. Dog owners must make sure that their dog doesn’t get too close to grazing animals.
However, should there be a cow attack, you must let go of your dog immediately. Dogs are fast enough and will get themselves out of danger, thereby drawing the cow’s attention away from the dog owner.
If you get in a dangerous situation: please keep calm and only hit the cow on the nose with a stick in an absolute emergency (!). Leave the danger zone slowly and carefully, without turning your back on the animals.

Shoes
When it comes to shoes, our Alpine Butler is very strict and will check before leaving that everyone is wearing suitable shoes. People wearing sneakers, normal shoes or sandals cannot take part. Quite right too – the hikes go up to 2,400 m altitude. Ankle-high and waterproof shoes are obligatory. They protect and support the foot and enable sure-footedness. To avoid getting painful blisters, new shoes should be worn-in on short walks beforehand.
Sun
It’s nearly always sunny at Turracher Höhe. Okay – sometimes a little less. But even then, the sun’s rays at this altitude should not be underestimated. You should therefore always carry sun cream in your rucksack.
Snacks
Even if delicious food is included on some Alpine Butler tours, you should always have your own snacks with you in your rucksack. On longer, up to one-day, tours this goes without saying – but you should also carry enough fluids (tea, water) and a chocolate or muesli bar with you on short mountain walks.
Weather
This can change very quickly in the mountains and we have no influence over it. Therefore, individual programme points could be cancelled or changed by the Alpine Butler at short notice. Thank you for your understanding!

Degrees of difficulty for various programmes
